Jared Cole has happily accepted our invitation to be the keynote speaker at the conference this year!  The topic of his presentation is: “Youth are the renewable resource of the future: a presentation on creating environmental opportunities for young people.”

Jared Cole seeks to transform the way people and organizations interact with the natural world. He has worked for nonprofit organizations such as Bridging The Gap, Missouri River Communities Network, and Friends of the Woods in his quest for sustainability. During his undergraduate studies at the University of Missouri, Jared founded Sustain Mizzou, a nonprofit organization that focuses on positive approaches to environmental issues and leadership development. Dear conference registrants… March 11, 2009

Thanks for registering for the Show Me Sustainability conference!
We’re looking forward to a great weekend of connecting, learning, and leading.

A few things to note:

  • When you arrive at the conference, please check-in at the table in the lobby of the Anheuser-Busch Natural Resources Building. You’ll get all sorts of goodies, including the final schedule of the conference, a name tag, and a locally-made granola bar (brain food!). Directions to the ABNR Building are on the conference website, on the page called “How to get here, eat, sleep.” Check-in will start at 5 p.m. Friday, and continue Saturday morning. If you haven’t paid your registration fee, we’ll ask you to do so then.

Things to bring:

  • If you have one available, please bring a poster or display of what’s going on your campus or with your group. There will be an open area set up with easels for groups to display, and we encourage everyone to take a look around and get inspired and connected.
  • On Friday night, there will be a t-shirt making workshop. Bring an old shirt, turn it inside-out, and you’ll have all the supplies necessary to paint the recycling chasing arrows (or other cool stuff) onto your shirt. It’ll be a homemade souvenir.
  • On Saturday night, there will be an Open Mic Night, so please bring your instruments, your slam poetry, or any other talents and passions you’d like to share.

Food details:

  • Saturday morning, before the workshops start at 9:30, a light breakfast food will be available. We’ve got dozens of fresh baked rolls from a local bakery arranged, and coffee from a local brew.
  • Saturday’s lunch is being catered by Main Squeeze, a natural food cafe. There will be two different types of sandwiches (both vegetarian) to choose from, potato salad, fruit, and lemonade. Your registration fee covers this fantastic lunch. Also, more of the locally-made granola bars will be available for sale if you need an afternoon snack or want to buy some to take back on your campus.
  • Saturday night, you’re on your own for dinner. A list of great local restaurants will go up on the website before Friday. We encourage you to go with other conference guests to dinner, to make the most of the time you get to spend with other sustainability nuts.

If you have any questions:

  • If you’re curious or worried about anything connected with the conference, please feel free to send us an e-mail at showmesustainability@gmail.com.

Thanks again for registering, and we’re looking forward to all the excitement this weekend holds,

The Show Me Sustainability Conference planning committee

Workshops March 7, 2009

Here are some of the workshops being presented on Saturday during the conference:

Sustainability through SIFE
Presented by Courtney Mitchell and Delfina Garcia, Students in Free Enterprise, University of Central Missouri

We will introduce SIFE at UCM and show what both the organization and the school have done to help the environment.  SIFE has six main criteria that we must fulfill through service with the community and UCM; one of the newer criteria that we cover is Environmental Sustainability.  We will present our projects that we have done to promote sustainability and try to motivate others to carry out similar ventures.

Hosting the National Teach-In or organizing other large campus/community events
Presented by Manny Abarca, University of Central Missouri

This session will be focusing on targeted large events that will raise awareness about the issues amongst your campus and community. The main focus will be about how to plan and execute, properly follow up with administrators and overall have successful events that will ultimately change mindsets and policy at your University. Although planning and executing a successful event is important the pre and post follow-up with administration is very important to ultimately make the greatest affect on campus.

Climate Action Now: Integrating Climate Education and Action into Truman State University
Presented by Dan Fister and Joshua Mantooth, Truman State University

We are developing a carbon-sequestration course and project at Truman State University with the help of the school and a grant from the National Wildlife Federation. This unique project includes getting students involved in planting, testing, studying, and maintaining experimental carbon-sequestering land at our University’s farm. This planting will use native species, and have a dual purpose as a windbreak for cattle and carbon-sequestration test site. This project is the first step in preparing Truman State University for a carbon-neutral, environmentally sustainable future.

Local Food Movements: How students can catalyze a community
Presented by Adam Saunders, graduate student adviser, Sustain Mizzou

This presentation will discuss the service learning class affiliated with Sustain Mizzou, taught by myself and two others, and how it has developed into a city wide effort to rebuild the local food system.  The talk will discuss the importance of integrating food into modern day sustainability efforts.

Leadership Development and Event Organizing: Some tips from the hardwood courts
Presented by Adam Saunders, graduate student adviser, Sustain Mizzou

This presentation will discuss leadership development and event organizing strategy.  An analogy of a basketball coach will be used to illustrate several common dynamics encountered by organizers.  The importance of leadership transition will be stressed and many helpful tips will be presented.

Effective Advocacy with Administrators (and others)
Presented by Ben Datema, student adviser, Sustain Mizzou

Getting administrators on your side can make or break your organization, effort, or project (or at least make it a lot easier or harder to do things).  What do administrators want?  How can you convince them to work with you and support your efforts?  This workshop will focus on successfully building and maintaining relationships and political capital with the people at the top.

Running a campaign for a Student Sustainability Fee for under $100
Presented by Patrick Margherio, president, Sustain Mizzou

On March 18th the University of Missouri student body voted to approve a $1 per student per semester sustainability fee that would provide funding for student lead campus sustainability efforts. In this workshop we will go through the approach taken by this campaign, how to build support, and where to invest your time, money, and energy for the best approach, all while doing it for under $100.

Who’s coming? March 6, 2009

Right now, here are some of the campuses and student groups who will have attendees at the conference:

Maryville University’s “Green Maryville Student Association”
Truman State University
Missouri University of Science & Technology
Missouri State University’s “Students for a Sustainable Future”
University of Central Missouri’s “Students in Free Enterprise”
University of Missouri – Columbia’s “Sustain Mizzou”

We’ll all be able to have some great discussions of what’s been working on our own campuses while learning from others to see how they overcame similar obstacles. This is a wonderful variety of campuses.

There’s still time to invite students you know from other campuses! The more schools represented, the better our discussions will be during the weekend.

Fantastic Food! March 6, 2009

Your registration fee will be going to feed you some of the best local food in town. We’re planning on having lunch catered by Main Squeeze, granola bar snacks provided by Herbal Oats, and coffee from Lakota. We’re working on getting some fruits and veggies for break times, but as you know, it’s late winter so not much snackable is growing locally.

We will have vegetarian and vegan food plentifully available during the conference. If you have any food allergies or other concerns that you didn’t list when registering, please feel free to e-mail showmesustainability@gmail.com

Just a reminder that you’re on your own getting dinner Saturday.
