Workshops
Here are some of the workshops being presented on Saturday during the conference:
Sustainability through SIFE
Presented by Courtney Mitchell and Delfina Garcia, Students in Free Enterprise, University of Central Missouri
We will introduce SIFE at UCM and show what both the organization and the school have done to help the environment. SIFE has six main criteria that we must fulfill through service with the community and UCM; one of the newer criteria that we cover is Environmental Sustainability. We will present our projects that we have done to promote sustainability and try to motivate others to carry out similar ventures.
Hosting the National Teach-In or organizing other large campus/community events
Presented by Manny Abarca, University of Central Missouri
This session will be focusing on targeted large events that will raise awareness about the issues amongst your campus and community. The main focus will be about how to plan and execute, properly follow up with administrators and overall have successful events that will ultimately change mindsets and policy at your University. Although planning and executing a successful event is important the pre and post follow-up with administration is very important to ultimately make the greatest affect on campus.
Climate Action Now: Integrating Climate Education and Action into Truman State University
Presented by Dan Fister and Joshua Mantooth, Truman State University
We are developing a carbon-sequestration course and project at Truman State University with the help of the school and a grant from the National Wildlife Federation. This unique project includes getting students involved in planting, testing, studying, and maintaining experimental carbon-sequestering land at our University’s farm. This planting will use native species, and have a dual purpose as a windbreak for cattle and carbon-sequestration test site. This project is the first step in preparing Truman State University for a carbon-neutral, environmentally sustainable future.
Local Food Movements: How students can catalyze a community
Presented by Adam Saunders, graduate student adviser, Sustain Mizzou
This presentation will discuss the service learning class affiliated with Sustain Mizzou, taught by myself and two others, and how it has developed into a city wide effort to rebuild the local food system. The talk will discuss the importance of integrating food into modern day sustainability efforts.
Leadership Development and Event Organizing: Some tips from the hardwood courts
Presented by Adam Saunders, graduate student adviser, Sustain Mizzou
This presentation will discuss leadership development and event organizing strategy. An analogy of a basketball coach will be used to illustrate several common dynamics encountered by organizers. The importance of leadership transition will be stressed and many helpful tips will be presented.
Effective Advocacy with Administrators (and others)
Presented by Ben Datema, student adviser, Sustain Mizzou
Getting administrators on your side can make or break your organization, effort, or project (or at least make it a lot easier or harder to do things). What do administrators want? How can you convince them to work with you and support your efforts? This workshop will focus on successfully building and maintaining relationships and political capital with the people at the top.
Running a campaign for a Student Sustainability Fee for under $100
Presented by Patrick Margherio, president, Sustain Mizzou
On March 18th the University of Missouri student body voted to approve a $1 per student per semester sustainability fee that would provide funding for student lead campus sustainability efforts. In this workshop we will go through the approach taken by this campaign, how to build support, and where to invest your time, money, and energy for the best approach, all while doing it for under $100.
